Five years after recalling its ambassador from Rabat, Iran has decided to restore diplomatic relations with Morocco because of the support from the authorities of the North African state for the ruling regime in Bahrain.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani approved the appointment of the former head of the Iranian diplomatic mission to Tunisia, the Netherlands and Greece, Mohammed Tiki, as ambassador to Morocco.
Rabat and Tehran expressed the need to return to the previous level of diplomatic relations earlier this year. However, as a condition for the return of an Iranian ambassador, the Moroccan authorities demanded that Iran respect the sovereignty of the kingdom, and not to interfere in its internal affairs.
The last Iranian ambassador left Morocco in 2009.
