Palestine will become a member of the International Criminal Court on April 1.
"The statute for a Palestinian state will come into force on 1 April 2015," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement. The corresponding document was sent by Palestinian diplomats to the ICC on Friday, Interfax reports.
The UN Security Council rejected a resolution on December 30 that would have set a three-year deadline for the establishment of a Palestinian state on lands occupied by Israel. The document did not receive the required majority support of 9 of the 15 member countries of the Security Council. In addition, the United States, having the right of veto, voted against it.
The Palestinian side has repeatedly pointed out that, in case of failure of the UN Security Council, the General Assembly will seek accession to the ICC.
