Lavrov to visit Turkmenistan today

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov goes to Turkmenistan upon completion of his visit to China today.

He will discuss with Turkmenistani political leaders bilateral relations and the situation in the region. Lavrov’s working visit continues the contacts that President Vladimir Putin and his Turkmenistani opposite number, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow, agreed upon at a Caspian summit in Astrakhan on September 29, 2014.

Lavrov plans to discuss in Ashgabat the most pressing of bilateral relations, including their humanitarian aspect. "The two countries will exchange opinions on cooperation in the formats of the UN and the CIS, of which Turkmenistan is an associated member," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a comment.

"Precisely focused attention will be paid to developments in Central Asia and particularly in the wake of the situation in Afghanistan, as well as to developments in the Middle East."

The Russian and Turkmenistani Foreign Ministers are expected to sign a program of bilateral cooperation between the two ministries for 2015. It includes a schedule for consultations on bilateral and multilateral problems.

Sergey Lavrov's last visit to Turkmenistan took place in April 2013, TASS reminds.
