PACE to discuss conflicts in South Caucasus

The next session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of
Europe (PACE) has started its work in Strasbourg. Among other issues
to be discussed the parliament will address the territorial conflicts
in the South Caucasus.

In 2005 PACE adopted Resolution 1416, which established the
Sub-committee on Nagorno-Karabakh. However, it was suspended after the
death of Lord Russell Johnson, the first chairman of the
Sub-committee. The question of resuming its work remains on the
bureau's agenda.

Conflict in the South Caucasus has been constantly on the agenda of
the Assembly since 2008. PACE has already issued several resolutions
on this matter, which demanded Moscow withdraw its recognition of
Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The Russian delegation stated that the
decision of PACE is not legitimate. Following the statement of Russia,
Georgia put forward the question of depriving Moscow of its powers in
Strasbourg. However, this proposal has not yet garnered any support.
