Kazakhstan’s upper house of parliament (Senate) has asked the country's president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, to hold early presidential elections. A total of 41 out of 42 members of the Senate voted in favor of this document at the Senate’s session.

"Please support the initiative of the Council of the People's Assembly and to consider the appointment of early presidential elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan," was said in the appeal, read by the Speaker of the Senate, K. Tokayev.

"In conditions of growing global tension, with emerging conflict situations and crises in the global economy, it is vital to ensure political stability," the lawmakers said in their appeal to the president. It also noted that Kazakhstan was entering a new stage of its development.

"In this regard, of great importance is stability, which is a prerequisite for the successful implementation of your course, aimed at carrying out the planned reforms," the statement is quoted by Tass.

The Council of the Kazakhstan People’s Assembly came forward with an initiative to hold early presidential elections on February 18. Under the country's laws, presidential elections are called by the head of state and organized within two months of the day they are called.
