Western politicians and analysts with different points of view are more and more talking lately about the same thing: about the recognition of mistakes made by the West in the assessment of Russia as a player in the geopolitical arena.
For example, a regular contributor to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Klaus-Dieter Frankenberg, accused Europe of "a catastrophic miscalculation." "The European Union and the United Kingdom sorely misjudged the mood in Moscow, the Ukrainian crisis, they behaved like lunatics who walked in their sleep. In fact, the EU could be accused of an error of judgment, which resulted in the naive belief that Russia is on the way to becoming a democratic state," says Frankenberg.
A less radical position was announced today by the Foreign Minister of Slovakia, Miroslav Lajcak, who urged the West to engage in dialogue with Russia, as without it there may not be found any solution to the conflict in Ukraine, neither may security in Europe be guaranteed. "We need to communicate. It is necessary to listen to the views of those with whom we disagree. They are definitely needed to be known and analyzed," he said.
British journalist Graham Phillips, in turn, said that he was ashamed of the position of Great Britain in relation to the events in the Donbass. The statement was made in response to a letter from the British Foreign Office, in which he was recommended to leave the Donbass. Phillips said that he would remain, as the purpose of his work is educating citizens about the situation in the region, as opposed to propaganda waged by the Western media, and the mistaken position of London.
Finian Cunningham, an American journalist, accuses the US of using the pretext of protection from Russia to exploit Europe. "Who is paying for this American megalomania? As usual, Europe. The war on our doorstep and sanctions, tearing apart the European economy - that's the price of the alliance with the American narcissists," says Cunningham.
