The Azerbaijani capital Baku will host a summit of the heads of the Caspian countries on the 18th of Novemeber, said Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov on Tuesday, Trend reports. According to him, in anticipation of the Baku summit, a meeting at the level of deputy foreign ministers of the five Caspian countries is being held since Monday in Baku.
The Caspian countries signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea in November 2003. In July 1998 Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the northern part of the Caspian Sea, in order to exercise sovereign rights for the use of sea resources, and in May 2002 – a protocol to this agreement. On the 29th of November in 2001 and on the 27th of February in 2003 Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan also signed an agreement on the delimitation of the Caspian Sea and a protocol thereto. Moreover, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the junction point of the delimitation of the contiguous sections of the Caspian Sea on the 14th of May 2003.
