UN condemns Shiite rebels in Yemen

The UN Security Council passed a statement on the situation in Yemen, expressing support for President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and condemning the Shiite rebels of the Ansar Allah Movement. The Security Council confirmed the legitimacy of the incumbent president and urged the sides in the conflict to refrain from any actions.

Shiites were condemned for undermining the political transition process in Yemen, threatening the security, stability, sovereignty and integrity of the country. The UN reminds that the rebels have not complied with the Security Council’s demand to move forces out of state buildings in Sana’a, RIA Novosti reports.

The Security Council urges all sides of the conflict to publicly announce the terms for conclusion of consultations on the Constitution, hold a constitutional referendum according to the new electoral law.

The UN expresses concern that Al-Qaeda forces on the Arabian Peninsula were taking advantage of the worsening political situation in Yemen. It urged the international community to refrain from interfering.

President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi fled the country in January as a result of losing control over the situation to the Ansar Allah group. The latter continues its offensive. Part of the country is controlled by Al-Qaeda, which killed at least 137 people in explosions at mosques on Friday, most of them aligned with Ansar Allah.
