Melikov rules out interethnic conflicts in Caucasus

Sergey Melikov, Russian plenipotentiary presidential envoy to the NCFD, said at an interview with editors of federal and regional mass media in Pyatigorsk that the North Caucasus had no interethnic or interreligious conflicts. To prove the point, the envoy mentioned several examples. Kabardino-Balkaria, in his words, is the brightest one due to peace between Kabardians and Balkars.

Another example is the coexistence of Chechnya and Ingushetia. Melikov reminded that part of the Sunzhensky District was on Ingush territory and part on Chechen. However, the envoy said that inhabitants of Aysonovskaya and Nesterovka had never felt hostility towards each other.

According to Melikov, disputes were a polemic of Chechen Leader Ramzan Kadyrov and Ingush Leader yunus-Bek Yevkurov and their parliaments, not interethnic conflicts. The presidential envoy believes that the disputes are augmented by people interested in economic and political gains. He added that both Ingushetians and Chechens were picking ramsons at Achkhoy-Martan.

Melikov said that there were also disputes between Moscow and the Moscow Oblast. The Moscow water service had one price for water within the Moscow Ring Highway and a different price beyond it. The envoy admitted that similar disputes happened in the Caucasus, and the straightforwardness of the local population would sometimes aggravate them.

The official added that any interethnic conflicts in the region were caused by Al-Qaeda, the CIA or other organizations, dishonest functionaries, non-commercial organizations and opposition.
