Abkhaz President Sergey Bagapsh expects the republic's authorities to allow Russians to buy primary housing in Abkhazia in early 2011.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported in February 2010 that received it had complaints from Russians who had seen their property expropriated in Abkhazia. Bagapsh promised that Russians will be allowed to purchase housing on the primary market in Abkhazia, the Kommersant paper reports.
Bagapsh said that Georgians that left Abkhazia during the war and were granted Russian citizenship would not be able to return, explining that they faced a very great level of antagonism.
Bagapsh said that he is against large construction projects in the republic, as they may ruin the appearance of Abkhazia. The maximum height of buildings should be 9 floors. Everything should be in harmony with nature, he explained.
Commenting on the international economic forum in Abkhazia this week, Bagapsh said that there is enormous interest in the republic and the authorities have to limit private investment projects. Among the investors he mentioned were Japan, China, and Germany.
