Vladimir Putin may address 70th session of UN General Assembly

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scrutinizing the possibility of making a speech at the opening of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, Kommersant Daily said.

"A final decision hasn't been taken yet. A visit to the General Assembly session is an option under consideration at present, and in this sense it's unimportant whether the session is or is not a jubilee one," presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

In recent years, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has been leading the Russian delegations to the General Assembly sessions. President Dmitry Medvedev addressed the UN in 2009. Vladimir Putin attended the opening of the General Assembly session in 2000, 2003 and 2005.

The majority of world leaders are expected to participate in the opening this year. Pope Francis I is expected to address the Assembly on September 25.
