Expert says EU split is the handiwork of Washington, not Moscow

The split in the European Union, which allegedly resulted because of "Russia's actions in Ukraine", could have been avoided if Washington abandoned its aggressive campaign against Moscow - Princeton University professor Stephen Cohen said.

"Today, the New York Times has released three materials on the negotiations between Greece and Russia, then an editorial article went out, in which they warned Athens to beware of Russia and Moscow and not to take any types of financial aid. ... The reader has a logical question: where did Russia get the money from, if in a version of the same media its economy is "cut to pieces" and Western sanctions have had a great success. The NYT contradicts itself," RIA Novosti quoted the American political scientist as saying.

He stressed that Greece and Cyprus have very close cultural ties with Russia, but the main motive of the meeting of heads of state is still the economy - the Southern European countries are in crisis and need help. "Without cooperation with Russia, the prosperity of the European economy is impossible," the expert said, claiming the self-destructive sanctions that the West imposed on Russia are one of the causes of this crisis.

"This is the problem that American elite should worry about much more than speculative conclusions about the "scenario" of Moscow to split EU," he explained.

According to Cohen, series of statements by the US Congress deputies, NATO or the media, are broadcasting the position of the establishment, not based on facts, but are the private opinions of people who want to "get to the barricades" of the Minsk Agreements and exacerbate the conflict in Ukraine.
