Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has proposed Sergey Sobianin, Deputy Prime Minister and the Chief of the Staff of the Russian Premier Vladimir Putin, as a candidate for the post of the mayor of Moscow.
The City Duma will now vote on his candidacy.
The post of the mayor of Moscow became vacant on the 28th of September, when Medvedev dismissed Yuri Luzhkov, who had been the mayor of the capital for more than 18 years, over a "lack of trust."
The United Russia party presented a list of candidates for the post of the mayor of Moscow on the 9th of October. It included the Transport Minister Igor Levitin, the First Deputy Mayor Lyudmila Shvetsova, as well as the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, and the former vice-mayor of Moscow, Valery Shantsev.
