Tbilisi receives Belarusian president for first time

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has made his first visit to Georgia. He will meet Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Patriarch Ilia II, President Giorgi Margvelashvili, and visit Batumi, News-Georgia reports.

Georgian politologist Petre Mamradze noted that such a visit was impossible during the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili. The Georgian Dream coalition did not pay enough attention to diplomacy in the post-Soviet space at first.

Politologist Iosif Tsiskarishvili opined that Belarus had not shown such interest in Georgia before. Georgia and Belarus have traditionally been very good friends, according to the analyst. Mamradze believes that the bilateral relations would not be spoiled by Saakashvili’s calls for a coup d’etat in Belarus. Brest and Batumi may become sister cities. The expert adds that the two states have common investment interests.

Nana Devdariani, the head of the Center of Global Research of Georgia, said that Saakashvili had always been on good terms with Lukashenko without demonstrating it to the public. The two countries have a common history and economic space. Devdaiani hopes that Lukashenko’s visit will boost business relations.

Georgia and Belarus have signed an agreement on cooperation of their Trade and Industry Chambers, an agreement on scientific and technical cooperation between the Agricultural Academy of Sciences of Georgia and the Academy of Sciences of Belarus and an agreement on scientific and technical cooperation of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia and the Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The documents were signed after a meeting of Georgian and Belarusian Presidents Giorgi Margvelashvili and Alexander Lukashenko in Tbilisi. They signed a joint declaration highlighting the development of bilateral relations.
