The electoral campaign in Kazakhstan has come to an end, followed by election silence. The candidates campaigning for the presidency are incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Communist Party member Turgun Syzdykov and President of the Federation of Trade Unions Abelgazi Kusainov.
Eduard Poletayev, the editor-in-chief of the World of Eurasia Journal, noted that the electoral process in Kazakhstan was quite predictable and well-organized. All candidates, in his words, have equal access to the media, the campaign has been uneventful, pessimists from foreign foundations and organizations have hardly made any critical remarks. In other words, everyone is happy with the current state of affairs.
Poletayev pointed out a set of hallmarks of this year’s campaign: the number of observers, including some from CIS countries, will be very high, the electoral mechanism has been given high coverage, with emphasis put on its compliance with international standards.
Concerning the strategy the candidates have chosen, Poletayev said that they had been very active in visiting regions and meeting with workers. The candidate of the Communist Party focused on anti-Western agitation. The leader of the trade unions advocated protection of the environment. The incumbent president was endorsing political reforms, modernization of the national administration and proposed five important steps.
As for the technical side, Poletayev claims that direction signs were well-placed, information with schemes was posted in two languages, the ballot sheets were distributed on time.
Andrey Chebotarev, the director of the 'Alternativa' Center of Actual Research, said that the campaign was notable for its competitiveness, albeit without mud-slinging. Each candidate had their own program and did not match it against others.
The expert highlighted the Communist Party for its skills in using advanced technologies and communications, such as the internet and social networks, despite being a conservative party. Chebotarev reminded that President Nazarbayev had held a session of the Kazakhstani parliament, met with counterparts of other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, the Turkish president and others simultaneously with the campaign. In conclusion, the analyst noted that each candidate had been preaching to their own congregations and had not engaged in debates.
