The US House of Representatives has adopted the project of the budget, which provides for a reduction in social spending of 5 trillion dollars over the next 10 years. At the same time, it is planned to increase military spending by 40 billion dollars ( by 7% - up to 531.3 billion) in the 2016 fiscal year.
A vote on the project of the budget in the Senate – the upper house of Congress – could be held in the near future. It is expected that this document, on which both houses of the American parliament agreed in advance, will be supported, the US media reports.
However, the unanimous desire of Congress to increase spending on "defense" is contrary to the position of President Barack Obama. The White House said earlier that the head of the US State intends to veto the law if it will be adopted by Congress, because cutting "the social sphere" puts an end to a key reform of Obama – the new health insurance scheme, which the media have dubbed Obamacare.
The US president cannot ignore the opinions of the parliamentarians. Thus, the project could include an amendment that allows the Senate to limit funding for the Obamacare program, to take appropriate decisions by a simple majority. As a result of this, Obama's decision can be changed, and the president of the United States can come to a compromise with the Republicans, including on an increase in military spending, Reuters reports.
In fact, America is slowly beginning to spin the flywheel of a new weapons race. We recall that the current US military budget for 2015 provides for the allocation of nearly 64 billion dollars to foreign military operations. In addition, 5 billion dollars is planned for operations against the group Islamic State.
