Putin and Erdogan to maintain good relations, says Kremlin

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that the leaders of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, maintain a good relationship, but no imminent contacts are planned.

"It is not planned," he said, answering a question about whether there would be a phone conversation soon between the leaders. "There has still been no request from the Turks," he said.

"In principle, they have good personal relations, it is possible that later at one point or another they will talk," TASS quotes him as saying.

The reason for the conversation might serve as a misinterpretation of the words of Erdogan. One of the participants of the meeting with him, the historian Mustafa Armagan, told the newspaper Milliet on May 8 that the Turkish president allegedly spoke about a possible "review of relations with Russia, which could lead to a decrease in the level of diplomatic relations to Consul General and Charge d'Affaires." Later, the historian admitted his mistake. "Perhaps he could not understand the statements of the president and in this form passed them on to the press."
