The Russian government has introduced the Turkish Stream project in the territorial planning scheme in the field of federal transportation up to 2030, for the first time documenting its implementation. An executive order was issued on May 6.
The Russian sea area of the Turkish Stream is still named as the South Stream in the document. But the name of the South Stream gas pipeline and its facilities will be further refined by the results of the adjustments of related programs, on which the preparation of schemes of territorial planning of the Russian Federation is based.Besides the Turkish Stream project, the new schema also include the 'Power of Siberia' pipeline, the 'Altai' pipeline and the gas pipeline connecting the Republic of Crimea with Krasnodar Territory. The Deputy Director of the Institute of Energy Strategy, Alexey Belogoriev, said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza that this may be a final rejection by Russia of the South Stream project in favor of the Turkish Stream project. "That is the decision that was announced in December last year, and a fundamental choice was made in favor of the Turkish Stream," he said.In this regard, the expert expressed his confidence that "the Russian government will make all efforts to sure that the Turkish Stream will be realized." "Another thing is that there are so many external issues related to this project, so there is no guarantee that it will be possible to implement it in the planned volumes. It doesn't raise concerns that the first phase of the project amounting to 16 5 billion cubic meters will be built. These volumes are needed for the domestic market in Turkey. As for the future lines of the pipeline, the position of the European Union, the European Commission, which refers to this project, is worse than towards the South Stream," Alexey Belogoriev said.
