Poroshenko signs a law on  decommunisation of Ukraine

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a law of condemnation of the communist and national socialist totalitarian regimes in Ukraine and prohibition of propaganda of their symbols, the press service of the Ukrainian state reports.

 

He also signed laws 'On access to the archives of the repressive organs of the communist totalitarian regime of 1917 - 1991', 'To commemorate the victory over the Nazis in World War II 1939 - 1945' and 'On the legal status and the memory of fighters for Ukrainian independence in the twentieth century', TASS reports.

 

"The documents prohibit Soviet symbols, condemn the communist regime, open the archives of the Soviet secret services and recognize the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and other organizations as fighters for the independence of Ukraine," the press service of Poroshenko reports.

 

"The bill initiated by the president proposes eliminating conflicts that could be used to abuse the rules of legislation, violations of the rights and freedoms of individual and citizen, in particular with regard to freedom of scientific research and international cooperation and dialogue," the statement reads.

 

These laws were adopted by the people's deputies of the Verkhovna Rada on April 9 by majority vote.
