Georgia celebrates Independence Day

On May 26, Georgia celebrates its Independence Day, commemorating the Act of Independence of 1918 that outlined the main principles of the nation's democracy.


The first paragraph of The Act of Independence of Georgia stated that "the Georgian people are the bearers of sovereign rights." The document also stated that the country will provide an opportunity for free development to all nationalities living on its territory.After being a part of the former Soviet Union, the country regained its sovereignty on April 9, 1991. A referendum on the restoration of the state independence of Georgia was held on March 31, 1991. The referendum was attended by 95% of voters, and 93% voted for state independence. Based on the results of the national referendum, the Supreme Council of the Republic adopted an Act on the restoration of Georgia's independence on 9 April 1991.Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev sent a congratulatory message to Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili. "Azerbaijan and Georgia are tied by centuries of friendly and good neighborly relations with deep historical roots. "Our countries have strong, active and strategic partnership. The United States is proud of the fact that we supported Georgia last year when your country held local elections. We express our strong support for the democratic and economic development of Georgia, which is very important for Euro-Atlantic integration, and the provision of new trade and investment opportunities," a congratulatory letter reads.
