CIA Director John Brennan said that the US spy agencies have received information about the growing military potential of Islamic State (IS).
"I must say that there has been a fair amount of intelligence about the growing capabilities of IS, as well as the challenges that beset the Iraqi government, the sectarian tensions that continue to fuel a lot of these problems."
According to him, the intelligence mission is to try to make sure "the policymakers and others understand developments as they evolve but a lot of times these developments are fast-breaking and very dynamic." "And the situation there is quite precarious in many areas. There has been a fair amount of challenges that beset the Iraqi government, the sectarian tensions that continue to fuel a lot of these problems," Brennan explained.
"I believe firmly that we're not going to resolve this problem on the battlefield. We have to keep the pressure on them, but at the same time there has to be a viable political process that's able to bring together the actors inside Iraq and Syria and for them to be able to decide how they're going to have a peaceful future," the head of the CIA said.
According to him, this is going to be a long fight. "I don't see this being resolved anytime soon. We need to turn back IS. We will turn back ISIS, I have no doubt about it, but I think there is going to be unfortunately a lot of bloodshed," Brennan noted.
