Ban Ki-moon to start Central Asia tour

The official representative of the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, said that Ban Ki-moon will take part in the G7 summit in Germany, after which he will start his tour of Central Asia countries.


"On June 8 the UN Secretary General will travel to Elmau to take part in meetings on terrorism with the G7 partners," RIA Novosti cited him as saying. While in Germany, he will also meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

"On June 9 the Secretary-General will arrive to Tajikistan, where he will attend the opening ceremony of the High-Level International Conference on the implementation of the International Decade, 'Water for Life',” Dujarric said. He will also meet with President Emomali Rahmon and will visit Lake Sarez.

On June 10 he will visit Kazakhstan, where he will participate in the 5th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions. He will also meet with President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Prime Minister Karim Massimov, Foreign Minister Erlan Idrissov, and Speaker of the Senate Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The Secretary-General will then travel to Kyrgyzstan, where on June 11 he will attend the opening of the International Conference on 'Development of Parliamentarianism'. He will also hold talks with President Almazbek Atambaev, Prime Minister Temir Sariev and the Speaker of Parliament, Asilbek Jeenbekov, and visit the city of Osh, where he will meet with civic society representatives and local authorities.

"On June 12 the Secretary-General will visit Uzbekistan, where he will meet with President Islam Karimov and Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov," the UN press service said.

Ban Ki-moon’s final stop in Central Asia will be Turkmenistan, where he will hold meetings with President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. He will also address faculty and students at the International University for Humanities and Development.
