Sergei Mikheyev: West needs less independent power in Azerbaijan

The deputy head of the Editorial Council of Vestnik Kavkaza, the Director General of the Institute for Caspian Cooperation, Sergey Mikheyev, told the host  of the radio-show 'Nachalo' on Vesti-FM, Giorgi Saralidze, that the West has increased political pressure on Azerbaijan because they are not satisfied with the current President of the Republic, Ilham Aliyev.

that the West has increased political pressure on Azerbaijan because they are not satisfied with the current President of the Republic, Ilham Aliyev.Giorgi Saralidze, talking about a recent report by US experts, according to which Azerbaijan has begun to build closer relations with Russia, stressed that the campaign launched against the First European Games in Baku clearly demonstrates the current attitude of the West toward Azerbaijan.Sergei Mikheyev explained the present movement of the Azerbaijan Republic from the West to the Russian Federation was due to this anti-Azerbaijani political campaign. "Relations between Azerbaijan and Russia were always quite warm. A certain rapprochement with Russia is actually observed, it can be described as a compromise: this is the tactic and the response to the increasing pressure on Azerbaijan by the West. The West is not satisfied with Ilham Aliyev, it's not a secret. He, in principle, does not conflict with them, but they would like to have another president – a less independent one," Mikheyev said.According to him, Azerbaijan has come to the appropriate conclusions. "In this sense, many post-Soviet states have realized that it is much safer to deal with Russia: Moscow doesn't interfere in the majority of cases in internal politics, to change presidents, to arrange revolutions," the expert noted."Is this to our advantage or disadvantage? I think in some cases it is a plus, in others it is a minus, but it's true. And many post-Soviet countries feel that it is easier to reach an agreement with Russia, in most cases, than to cheat the Americans, which is impossible by the way," Sergey Mikheev concluded.
