CIS countries need to unite, Mikhail Shvydkoy says

Speaking at the ongoing Third Voronezh Meeting of the Eurasian Club of Young Historians, the special representative of the Russian President for International Cultural Cooperation, Mikhail Shvydkoy, noted that the CIS countries have to unite.

He recalled that in 2006, during his visit to Armenia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said words which gave rise to an active debate in society: "The CIS was created for a civilized settlement, not for joint attack activities." From a political point of view, the President was right, but it was not immediately obvious, because the Belovezhkiye Agreements were signed in very tough conditions, that is why a lot remained unclear.

Shvydkoy expressed confidence that the process of the creation of national states has been completed in the post-Soviet territories.

"One of the problems that existed in the 1990s and 2000s was the phrase ‘‘How will they exist without us?’’ in respect of the CIS countries. It was fatal, because these countries are able to exist without us," Michael Shvydkoy noted.
