There will be no sudden decisions on Georgia's joining NATO at the
Lisbon summit on November 18-19, the Secretary general of NATO Anders
Fogh Rasmussen said at a press-conference today, RIA Novosti reports.
Georgia may expect that NATO will confirm the decision made in
Bucharest in 2008 that Georgia will become a member of the alliance as
long as it meets NATO standards, Rasmussen said.
He reminded that Georgia is an issue of disagreement between NATO and
Russia. The alliance supports the territorial unity of Georgia and is
devoted to the non-recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
However the NATO leader stated that Russia and NATO have other issues
of mutual agreement, such as security. This is why they started joint
consideration of security challenges of the 21st century in December
last year. This will be the basis of practical cooperation, Anders
Fogh Rasmussen concluded.
