US President Barack Obama has prolonged the terms of the document
against Iran, which was introduced on November 14th 1979, when the
Islamic revolution seized power in the country and took the staff of
the US embassy in Tehran hostage, RIA Novosti reports, citing the
White House.
The president said that relations with Iran have not returned to
normal and the process of fulfilling the agreements of 1981 has not
been completed. The sanctions need to be prolonged even after November
14th 2010, the US president said in his letter to the Congress.
The sanctions have been being prolonged every year.
On January 19th 1981, the US and Iran signed agreements under the
mediation of Algiers. The documents were intended to solve the crisis
with the US hostages. The agreements also contained principles of
improving relations between the USA and Iran.
The USA promised not to interfere in the internal affairs of Iran,
lift trade sanctions and unfreeze bank accounts. Iran promised to pay
off its foreign debt to the USA. Washington believes that Iran will
not fulfill the agreements and is developing a nuclear program that
threatens the world.
There are also international sanctions against Iran.
