Ter-Petrosian to run for presidential elections

The first president of post-Soviet Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosian, the
former head of Armenia from 1991 to 1998, will put forward his
candidacy from the Armenian National Congress (ANC) at extraordinary
presidential elections, said the coordinator of the opposition
movement, Levon Zurabian, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the constitution, the next presidential elections in
Armenia will be held in 2013.

The Armenian National Congress (ANC), headed by the first president of
Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan, was founded on the 1st of August, 2008.
The ANC united about 20 political parties and organizations. The main
requirements of the ANC are the release of political prisoners,
restoration of the constitutional rights of citizens and early
elections.

Levon Ter-Petrosyan was elected first president of an independent
Armenia on the 16th of October 1991. At the next elections, on the
22nd of September 1996, Ter-Petrossian was re-elected. However, this
angered the opposition, which considered the elections to be a massive
fraud during the elections. In February 1998, Ter-Petrosyan was
already forced to resign.

In the presidential elections held on the 19th of February 2008,
Ter-Petrosian lost to Serzh Sargsyan. The Armenian opposition, headed
by former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, has organized several
meetings in central Yerevan, complaining about the results of the
voting process.
