Iran believes that possible deployment of NATO anti-aircraft systems
in the Persian Gulf is carried out in the interests of Israel, News
Armenia reports, citing ISNA and the official spokesman of the Iranian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ramin Mekhmanparast.
Last week the Turkish media reported that Ankara agrees to deploy
elements of NATO’s AA systems on its territory on three conditions.
Firstly, that the Turkish authorities speak for establishment of the
AA systems in the interests of NATO, and not the USA. Secondly, it
must be aimed at providing security for all countries of NATO and,
thirdly, that Turkey will not become a flank country, as it was during
the years of the Cold War.
Turkish Premier Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on November 12 that
they had not made a final decision on the issue. The final decision
will be made on November 19-20 at the NATO summit in Lisbon.
The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted on
Tuesday that Iran is consulting on the issue with Turkey. Iran is
concerned about the issue and has doubts about it, Mekhmanparast said.
