NATO PA officially recognizes occupation of Georgia

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly has officially recognized occupation
of the Georgian territory with a resolution, Georgian Deputy Minister
of Foreign Affairs Nino Kalandadze told a special briefing, Trend
reports.

NATO's PA passed a resolution in Warsaw to support the sovereignty and
territorial unity of Georgia. The resolution classifies Abkhazia and
the Tskhinvali region as occupied territories.

The resolution supports Georgian democratic reforms, in particular the
local elections of May 30.

The resolution urges Russia to fulfil the obligations of the European
Union concerning the ceasefire agreement.

Russia was urged to withdraw its forces from Georgian territory, allow
refugees to return home and EU provide monitoring on occupied
territory, Kalandadze said.

The deputy minister believes that the resolution, passed on the
threshold of the NATO summit in Lisbon, is an “especially significant”
event.

On the night of August 8, 2008, there were high-scale military actions
in South Ossetia. Georgian forces entered Tskhinvali. Later, Russian
forces pushed the Georgian forces out of the city. In late August
Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Tbilisi broke all diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced that
the breakaway republics were occupied territories.
