PACE supports a dialogue between Georgia and South Ossetia, PACE Commission spokesman for the monitoring of the conflict zone David Wilshire said at a meeting with the South Ossetian president’s envoy for post-conflict settlement, Boris Chochiyev, RIA Novosti reports.
The meeting took place in the South Ossetia embassy in Moscow.
Wilshire and his colleague Matias Yershi are to finish preparation for a report on the August 2008 war between Russia and Georgia, to be presented on April 28th.
“There is no point in returning to August 2008. Our efforts are aimed at PACE aiding in a dialogue between Georgia and South Ossetia to avoid bloodshed in the future,” Wilshire said.
Chochiyev noted that previous PACE reports on South Ossetia did not reflect the real reasons for the war. He added that PACE should take measures against a possible repeat of the events of August 2008.
At the same time he noted that Georgia “backed by international organizations and some countries still refuses to follow the agreements from the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan formulating a legal document forbidding the use of force”.
According to Chochiyev, the Georgian side seeks to politicize the decisions on humanitarian issues, in particular, the stoppage of gas supplies to the Leningorsk region of South Ossetia. He noted that “the Georgian side wants to use discussions in Geneva as a cover for his military preparations, since many countries still continue to arm Saakashvili’s regime.
