Russian President Dmitry Medvedev considers the recent Russian-NATO
summit to have a historic significance, noting that the sides need to
use the chance to improve ties, RIA Novosti reports.
The president said that the sides cooperate in solving the Afghan
problem, drug trafficking, terrorism, maritime security problems,
proliferation of nuclear arms. The European anti-missile an issue that
can unite the sides.
Medvedev said that the four-stage anti-missile system will be deployed
in 2010. It will be a joint initiative of Russia and NATO. But if
Russia fails to find its place in the system there may be a new arms
race.
This is why the Russian president formed a system of sectoral
responsibility at the summit in Lisbon. He expects the USA and other
NATO partners to consider the proposal.
Medvedev said that the Russian doctrine does not consider NATO a
threat, but says that uncontrolled expansion of NATO may lead to
instability of international situation.
