The Kropotkin regional veterinary laboratory in Krasnodar Territory
has registered the African swine flu at a private farm in
Sherbinovskiy District, the main department of the Russian Emergency
Ministry in the region says.
Outbreaks of the flu had been registered earlier, in Krasnoarmeysk,
Temruk, Starominsk, Kurganin and Novopokrovsk Districts. The Emergency
Ministry said that three pigs of 8-9 months were infected in
Sherbinovskiy District. There were a total of 12 pigs on the farm. The
results of the tests were sent to the laboratory in Pokrov where
presence of the virus was confirmed.
Six pigs have already died at the farm. There are approximately 3,000
pigs in a five-kilometre radius. The authorities have settled barriers
and took the control over trade, import and export of ham in the area.
The African swine flu, discovered by Montgomery, was first registered
in 1903 in South Africa. Wild and domestic pigs are sensitive to the
disease. The infection spreads via physical contact. The virus is of
no threat to humans but causes great economic damage.
