Turkish police dig up explosives in probe involving military

Turkish investigators have dug up 30 articles of plastic explosives and 900 bullets as part of a probe involving the military, the Turkish news agency Hurriyet reports.

According to unnamed sources, the dig was made in Poyrazköy, an Istanbul suburb, on the basis of a sketch seized during a recent search at a navy base in nearby Gölcük, as part of an investigation into allegations of "blackmail and military espionage".

Dozens of other suspects have been put on trial as part of the probe into Ergenekon, an alleged gang that stands accused of planning bombings and assassinations to throw Turkey into chaos and prompt a military coup against the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, which opponents see as a threat to Turkey's secular system.
