According to a Kremlin press service statement, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed the law banning the use of the title of ‘president” for regional heads, the Voice of Russia reports. The residents of all districts are free to chose the title of their administration's head.
The State Duma made amendments to that end on the 21st of December and the Federation Council approved them on the 24th of this month.
The amendments were submitted to parliament for consideration by the regional heads proper.
The first to make the suggestion was the Chechen leader, Ramzan Kadyrov. So far only 12 of the 83 regional leaders in Russia have been using the title of ‘president’ with reference to themselves.
