Iran pursues active policy in human rights

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh says Tehran has always adopted an active policy on human rights issues in international and bilateral summits, Press TV reportsAkhundzadeh made the remarks in a meeting with Swiss Deputy Foreign Minister Peter Maurer in the fifth round of the mutual Iran-Switzerland annual talks in Tehran on Wednesday.


During the meeting, the Iranian foreign ministry official highlighted the Islamic Republic's efforts in the field of human rights within the framework of international organizations and institutions such as the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of Islamic Conference.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister reiterated the necessity of adopting a non-political position in dealing with human rights issues in Iran.

The national subsidy reform plan and the government's concerns about the absolute economic and social rights of the people from all walks of life, is part of the country's major measures for the complete materialization of human rights, he concluded.

The Swiss deputy foreign minister, for his part, lavished praise on Iran for its "constructive and active interaction in mutual and international human rights arena," particularly Iran's active presence in The Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which involves a review of human rights records of all 192 UN member states.

The Swiss side also thanked the Islamic Republic for its accession to international human rights conventions.

Maurer hailed Iran for hosting one million Afghan refugees over the years.
