Supported by the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia will try to make progress in
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement this year, Russian Minister
of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov said at a news conference in Moscow.
President Dmitry Medvedev is using his ties in Yerevan and Baku to
solve the problems in a trilateral format, the minister said.
Lavrov noted that Medvedev has already had over 10 meetings with his
counterparts from Baku and Yerevan and had contacts with the minister
of foreign affairs of the countries.
The minister said that it is important to avoid interference into the
process. Involvement of the UN and OSCE is always followed by
disagreements, tensions between the sides and antagonism.
Vestnik Kavkaza reported earlier that Sergey Lavrov confirmed that the
ministers of foreign affairs of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia will
meet in January.
Vestnik Kavkaza had reported earlier that the latest meeting on
settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was held
within the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CIS in
Moscow in early December, after the OSCE summit in Astana.
However, there were no declarations made after the meeting, leading to
doubts among experts that the talks would be fruitful.
The new talks are expected to determine the features of the
negotiation process in the new year and take into account the
peculiarities of its current state.
