91 people were detained in Iran on Saturday on the anniversary of the presidential elections, which were followed by the sharpest political crisis in all the history of the Iranian Islamic Republic, ITAR TASS reports, citing ISNA and the head of the Tehran police, Hoseyn Sajaddiniya.
According to Sajaddiniya, no serious fighting took place, there were only some skirmishes between supporters of the opposition and security forces on university campuses.
On June 12th 2009 presidental elections took place in Iran, in which Mahmud Ahmadinejad was announced the winner, but the opposition refused to accept the official results of the elections. The police detained about 4000 of the demonstrators.
The ex-premier, Mir Hoseyn Musavi, and the ex-parliamentary speaker, Mehdi Karroubi, asked the authorities to allow peaceful demonstrations. The request was not complied with and the opposition refused to hold demonstrations after the heads of the Interior Ministry said that any unauthorized attempts to demonstrate would be suppressed.
