"Upper Lars" working at full capacity

The "Upper Lars" checkpoint on Georgian territory through which the majority of transit vehicles heading from Russia to Armenia pass, has been fully opened to heavy trucks, ARKA reports quoting press secretary of the Transportation and Connection Ministry of Armenia, Susanna Tonoyan.

The checkpoint had been closed for three years, on the initiative of Russia. The official reason given for closing the checkpoint was reconstruction work. It opened again on March 1st, 2010.

The checkpoint will be opened every day from 6 am until 10 pm (from March 1st through to November 1st), the rest of the year it will be closed at 7 pm. The checkpoint can let through about 7000 people a day, 50 buses and 500 private cars. The new electronic passport control system can check biometric passports.
