A special commission has killed over one third of pigs from private
farms in the village of Krasnogvardeysk in Stavropol Territory, where
an outbreak of African swine flu was registered, RIA Novosti cites the
head of the village administration Tamara Makarenko.
Information on pig death appeared at the Nadezhda animal-breeding
complex in the Krasnogvardeysk District on January 6. A state of
emergency was introduced on January 8.
Specialists killed 9,500 pigs at the complex and started killing pigs
at private farms on January 18.
703 pigs were killed, with 108 having been killed today, from the
1,800 pigs in the village, Makarenko said.
She said that there are hardly any refusals to give away pigs. People
are worried about compensation.
African swine flu was first registered in 1903 in South Africa. Wild
and domestic pigs are sensitive to the disease. Infection spreads
through physical contact. The disease is of no threat to people.
However, infected animals cannot be vaccinated or treated. The disease
can only be stopped via a quarantine, which causes great economic
damage.
