The Armenian National Assembly passed amendments to the Family Code on
Tuesday, introducing stricter rules for the adoption of children from
Armenian communities, News Armenia reports.
The amendments allows Armenian citizens living abroad to adopt
children. The old version of the law concerned foreigners only.
Armenian Justice Ministry says that foreigners adopt 30-35 children
annually. They are mainly ill children who get treated by their
foreign foster families.
The amendments guarantee children the right for life and upbringing,
the right to know their biological parents, freedom of parental care,
except cases when it contradicts the child's interests.
The amendments regulate the order of registering newborn children in
the Civil Registry Offices.
