The North Caucasian Federal District concluded the first stage of vaccinations against poliomyelitis held on April 4-9, RIA Novosti cites the Chief Sanitary Inspector Gennady Onishchenko as saying.
Over 96% of 1.3 million people were vaccinated.
599,779 were vaccinated in Dagestan.
An outbreak of poliomyelitis was registered in Tajikistan in 2010. The disease was registered in the North Caucasus and the Southern Federal District. Additional immunization of children was held in 13 regions of the NCFD and SFD in October-November, with over 2.2 million children, or 95%, being vaccinated.
The second vaccination stage will be held on May 3-7. Children aged from 6 months to 15 years will be vaccinated in the NCFD, except in Stavropol Territory.
Vaccination of children aged under 3 will be held in 43 Russian regions, covering 95% of the population.
This year the Russian Ministry of Healthcare and Social Development is using “live” vaccine. “Dead” vaccine was used since 2008. Booster vaccines are administered at the ages of 18 or 20 months and 14 years.
The disease affects the central nervous system. 80% of patients suffer from palsy for the rest of their lives after contracting the disease. More complicated cases result in the breathing system stopping.
