The Russian parliament today saw the presentation of a report entitled “Central Asian Region: strategic partnership and security”.
The presentation started with a speech by Gerasimov, the deputy chairman of parliament. He noted the great role of Central Asia in terms of foreign policy and problems between Russia and the five states of the region.
Ostrovsky, chairman of the committee for CIS affairs and links with compatriots, continued the presentation, noting that competition for influence in Central Asia has reached its peak. Iran, Turkey and India are ready to join the competition.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Karasin said that Russia’s main goals in the region are stability and sustainable development. He believes that Russia needs to be more active in contacts at inter-parliamentary and inter-departmental levels for more efficient and fruitful cooperation.
Vinokurov, head of the presidential department for inter-regional and cultural links with foreign states, Zavarzin, chairman of the defense committee, Bagdasarov, member of the commission for foreign affairs, Kozlovsky, deputy chairman of the committee for CIS affairs and links with compatriots, Bordyuzha, Director General of the CSTO, Nikonov, executive director of the Russky Mir Fund, and officials from the Energy Ministry, Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Industry Chamber, Federal Migration Service, Federal Customs Service, law-enforcement structures, business, international organizations and analytical centers took part in discussions of the topic.
Director General of the Information and Analytics Center of the history department of Moscow State University of Lomonosov, Alexey Vlasov, Deputy Director General of the center, Agakishiyev, and expert of the center, Revsky, were also at the meeting.
