Georgian president tells Euronews about opposition and Russian attitude towards it

Georgia is one of the oldest Christian nations and has always wanted
to rejoin with the West, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili told
Euronews, Trend reports.

The opposition, in trying to take parliamentary seats, has full access
to television but wants to overthrow the government. The opposition is
scarce, which is good news, Saakashvili said.

The EU ambassador said that government actions in the opposition
crackdown on May 26 were legitimate, although force was excessive. Two
people died and several were injured.

Saakashvili says that he was the last person wishing to use force.
Georgia will continue reforms and needs to find ways for their
realization.

90% of the bureaucracy was removed after the “Rose Revolution”. The
police forces were disbanded. The situation is improving. The crime
level dropped 5-fold. Georgia has become one of the safest European
states, Saakashvili noted.

Tbilisi wants a dialogue with Russia, but Russia needs to be more
liberal and open, he said.

Georgia strives to join the West, due to its internal values, rather
than geopolitical priorities. Russia needs to leave Georgian territory
and allow it to administrate itself, the president concluded.
