Moscow to unveil monument to Muslim Magomayev on September 15

Moscow will unveil a monument to Singer and People's Artist of the
USSR Muslim Magomayev at the crossing of Avenues Yeliseyevsky and
Voznesensky on Seotember 15, RIA Novosti reports.


The monument was designed by People's Artist of Russia Alexander
Rukavishnikov and Honoured Architect of Russia Igor Voznesensky.
High-ranking officials, artists and public figures will be at the
opening.


Magomayev died in October 2008, aged 66. He was buried at the Honorary
Alley in Baku.


Magomayev sprang to fame at the Kremlin Hall at a concert in 1962. He
became a solo singer at the Azerbaijani Theater of Opera and Ballet of
Akhundov in 1963. He had training at the La Scala Theater in Milan in
1964-1965. Magomayev performed at the Olympia Theater in Paris in 1966
and 1969.


In 1969 he received MIDEM Gold Disc Award in Cannes. Magomayev became
the People's Artist of the USSR in 1973, aged 31. He supervised the
Azerbaijani State Estrade Symphonic Orchestra.


The singer boasted over 600 works, starred in such films as "Nizami",
"Poet Muslim Magomayev", and "Moscow in Notes". He wrote over 20 songs
and composed music for films. He wrote a book about a famous US singer
Mario Lanza. In recognition of Magomayev's professional successes, a
Russian astronomical society named a planetoid of the solar system,
4980 Magomaev, in 1974, with a code 1974 SP1.
