Azerbaijan plans to cease sturgeon fishing in the Caspian Sea, Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources Huseingulu Bagirov said on Thursday, Trend reports.
Azerbaijan supports at least a 10-year ban for sturgeon fishing in the Caspian Sea because sturgeons start laying eggs at an age of about 8-10 years.
Baku hosted a summit of leaders of Caspian states on November 18, 2010, where presidents decided that the commission for bio resources of the Caspian Sea should discuss a 5-year ban for sturgeon fishing.
The Caspian has the following species of sturgeons: huso huso, acipenser nudiventris, suruga and acipenserida. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has put the four species on the list of endangered species.
