Parliamentary polls will not be held in Janaozen

Kazakh parliamentary polls will not be held in the city of Janaozen, where mass disorders took place on December 16 and a state of emergency imposed, Chairman of the Constitutional Council Igor Rogov said, News Kazakhstan reports.


16 people were killed and dozens injured in disorders in Janaozen on December 16. Dozens of buildings and vehicles were burnt down. President Nursultan Nazarbayev imposed a state of emergency in the city until the end of 2012. Protests in the city were prohibited, photography and camera recording was limited. The disorders were initiated by a strike of petroleum staff demanding higher wages. The court called the strike illegal and the strikers were fired.


Kazakhstan will hold unscheduled parliamentary polls on January 15.
