The fire in the Hazrat Sultan mosque in the capital of Kazakhstan Astana has been put out, The Voice of Russia the press-service of the city emergency department as saying.
The fire covered an area of 800sq.m. One person died in the fire.
The mosque was planned to open in December last year for the 20th anniversary of the independence of Kazakhstan but due to a lot of defects and unfinished details President Nursultan Nazarbayev ordered to extend the construction work for another year.
The reason for the fire has not been given yet. There is a version that the fire could have started because of welding work.
This mosque is the largest in Central Asia. When it opens it will be able to hold 5,000 believers.
