Russian Vice-Premier Victor Zubkov requested police to punish violators of veterinary control more actively in Russian regions and prevent outbreaks of African swine flu, Yuga.ru reports.
The only way to combat the disease is to prevent it, there are no vaccines. Zubkov criticized the Agriculture Ministry earlier, condemning it for inefficient measures against the disease. Nikolai Vlasov, deputy head of the Russian Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Monitoring Service and Chief Veterinary Inspector, may be dismissed, according to reports on January 19.
An outbreak of African swine flu happened at the Industrialny breeding farm of the Timashevsky District of Krasnodar Territory on January 8. Specialists started inspecting trade posts in the region on January 11. 21 police officers were mobilized and 6 stationary posts were formed.
Governor of Krasnodar Territory Alexander Tkachyov announced dismissal of the chief veterinary inspector of Timashevsky District. He also dismissed the local head Anatoly Potapenko on January 12.
Transport of meat products was banned in the area until the situation stabilizes. Two veterinary police control posts were set in the Krasnogvardeysky and Teuchezhsky Districts on the roads Maikop – Ust-Labinsk – Korenovsk and Enem - Bzhedugkhabel, Yuga.ru reports.
