A group of Kazakh citizens addressed the government with a request to remove Russian names from the map of Kazakhstan in order to stop discrimination against the Kazakh language, RIA-Novosti reports referring to Today.kz website.
The group of Kazakh activists in their letter also demanded that state officials take exams in the Kazakh language, and proposed a list of jobs requiring compulsory knowledge of the native language.
The authors of the letter called the Russian names “a gloomy legacy of Soviet totalitarianism” and “a menacing reminder of our country’s colonization,” RIA-Novosti quotes the letter.
