Georgian ex-president Eduard Shevarnadze has condemned the dismantling of the monument in honour of Stalin, located in Gori, and said that destruction of monuments won't change history, Novosti Georgia reports.
"The monument's dismantling is unacceptable, - Shevarnadze said. - These steps are insulting and will never change history," he added.
He also noted that in 1961, when monuments of Stalin were being dismantled all over the Soviet Union, this one remained untouched, in accordance with requests of the local population.
"Meanwhile, Stalin said: "Hitlers come and go, but the German nation and the German state remain," Shevarnadze said.
The Georgian authorities say that a monument is planned to be erected in honor of victims who died in the war of 2008 on that square, and the monument of Stalin will be removed to the Stalin House-Museum. "We are not fighting history, just all things should be in their place," Georgian minister for European Integration Giorgii Baramidze said.
